When learning English, students feel that the toughest problem for them is to memorize vocabulary. Even though they have a good stock of vocabulary, they cannot apply them appropriately. In order to develop their English competence, we need to find ways to help the students to solve this problem. Together with some of the colleagues, the author puts forward a new model in vocabulary teaching---- natural-holographic model. This paper will mainly center on the definition of the model, its theoretical bases, and its application through a case study. There are six chapters, which are as follows. In chapter one the author makes a brief survey of current vocabulary teaching, and analyzes the reasons why the students cannot memorize enough amount of vocabulary and why they cannot use them appropriately. The reasons may be derived from both teachers and students. No matter how hard it is, we should aid the students to overcome this difficulty----vocabulary, for it has a close relation to listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed. Chapter two presents a general idea of four current approaches in vocabulary teaching, with each having its own advantages and disadvantages. They have one thing in common, that is, to touch the problem of vocabulary mainly from linguistic point of view without considering other factors involved in the learning process. After making a literature review of development of both linguistic theories and methodology, in chapter three, the author offers the proposal of natural-holographic model. Besides linguistic theories, the author applies achievements made in other related fields to this model as its theoretical bases, such as the holographic nature of language, the principle of brainwaves, the holographic theory of memory, and the psychological process of learning. The enlightenment we get from all those theories is that teachers should give more emphasis on the holographic nature of the language instead of only particular aspects of the language. Teachers need to adjust students'state of mind to the state of relaxed alertness. Meanwhile, a light-heartening environment will be created for our students to reduce their anxiety for learning, which will exert a negative effect on learning. In chapter four the author illustrates how this model is applied in teaching practice. The role of teachers is to guide instead of forcing the students to learn, and the role of the students is to actively participate in the teaching activities and develop confidence in themselves. Through six steps they can have a new try of learning vocabulary. In order to assess the practical value of this model, the author...
