As an important part of language,vocabulary is the basis of learning English and the key to learning English well.As the initial stage of English learning,English vocabulary learning is particularly important in primary school.However,for primary school students,traditional English vocabulary teaching methods and memory methods are boring and uninteresting,which directly affects their vocabulary learning.Compared with other vocabulary teaching methods,mind mapping can promote students' divergent thinking,help students to establish the connection between vocabulary through association and imagination,promote the active exploration and construction of knowledge,and thus stimulate students' potential of vocabulary understanding,memory and application..Based on the current situation,this study aims to explore the effects of mind mapping on vocabulary teaching in primary school.This research mainly discusses the following two questions:(1)What is the effect of mind mapping on students' English vocabulary performance?(2)What is the effect of mind mapping on students' attitude towards English vocabulary learning? In the research,64 students from Class one and Class two of Grade three in a primary school in Shandong Province were selected as the subjects for 12 weeks.For the sake of the accuracy of the experimental data,the author put to use the instruments of questionnaires,interviews and tests.Through the pre-test analysis by SPSS,it was found that there was no difference in vocabulary performance between the two classes.Also Class two as the experimental class and Class one as the controlled class were determined.Then,the current situation and problems of English vocabulary learning were obtained through thepre-interviews and pre-questionnaire.In the process of the experiment,the experimental class adopted mind mapping to teach vocabulary,while the controlled class adopted conventional teaching method to teach vocabulary.After the experiment,the post-questionnaire and post-interview were conducted again to explore the effect of mind mapping on students' attitude towards vocabulary learning.SPSS was also used to analyze the effect of mind mapping on students' vocabulary performance.Through the comparison and analysis of the above data,we can draw the following conclusions: the application of mind mapping to English vocabulary teaching is helpful to students' vocabulary learning and memory,and improves their vocabulary performance to a certain extent;at the same time,it also has a positive effect on students' interest and initiative in English vocabulary learning.In a word,the application of mind mapping to English vocabulary teaching can enhance students' interest in English vocabulary learning and improve their English learning performance,which plays a positive role in English vocabulary teaching and has the value of being adopted and promoted.
