The Gothic novel is a novel pattern which appears in the last half of the 18th century. The novelists belonging to this school reject to describe the daily life of their living period, instead, they tend to concern the mysterious and horrified unusual mattes happens in the Medieval Age. It is a rebellion and challenge of the realism and rationalism developed in the enlightenment period. The Gothic novelists adopt the supernatural materials (e.g. ghost, witchcraft, hermit, illusion, birthmark, shabby manuscripts, dilapidated castle etc.) and use special artistries, such as fabrication, imagination, and combination of realism and surrealism to describe the unordinary person and portray their psychological world under the extreme circumstances, thereby, it broadens the creation field and enriches the artistic techniques. A large number of excellent novelists and works belong to the Gothic school. From the second half of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century, the Gothic school flourished. The readers cover every social status. This school evokes strong repercussions and influences the writers in the following generations.The Monk was written by Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775-1818) when he was 19, which is also his representative works and it is this novel that makes him famous. Since published in 1976, it has created a stir and become one of the classic Gothic novels, owing to this, Lewis himself is well-known as"The Monk Lewis".In The Monk, a great amount of traditional Gothic writing techniques are used. The theme and plot closely focus on the"Black Romanticism"while especially center on"black".
