Bai Xianyong's Disgraceful Sons has quite an important place in novels about homosexuals, and it is viewed as a masterpiece in this theme in Chinese literature. From the perspective of humanity, the author, Bai Xianyong, tries to depict the life of a special social group, the homosexuals, objectively and realistically. Not only does he feel sympathy for his heroes in this novel, but also he has a deep understanding of their miserable life in the society. Hence, humanistic tenderness penetrates his writing. Facing up to the problem of homosexuality which is in conflict with conventional moral norms, he feels great concern for this group of people; meanwhile, he hopes those who guard the tradition could reconsider their moral norms.1. The exile of those disgraceful sons of the society"Exile", the first part of the novel, displays a terrifying picture in a few lines. Barefoot Li Qing (a hero of the novel) is chased by his father in an extremely sunny afternoon. The red-eyed father shouts,"The beast."in a sad, trembling, hoarse voice, with his hair standing on end in fury. This scene replays in the following chapter when Wang Jilong's love affair with A Feng is learnt by his father. His father drives him to the U.S.A and decides that before his departure from this world, Wang Jilong is never allowed to come back home. How cruel this exile is, and this frightens every reader.In the case of the novel, we can see the author, Bai Xianyong, is not planning to write a novel focusing merely on homosexuality.
