As one form of communicative teaching, task-based instruction, namely, task-based Learning (TBL) means that within a given theme, tasks are constructed that call for students to utilize different learning strategies and foster different aspects of communicative competence. TBL initiates wide attention recently among English teachers and has been gaining popularity in the field of foreign language acquisition.This study is designed to investigate the feasibility and practical problems of task-based instruction in college classroom in China. It is based on rationale of the task-based language teaching and the author's practical experiment. The value of the study lies in that it offers some guidance for English teachers in china who are devoted to innovation in their teaching method.The thesis is divided into six parts.The first part is an introduction, which briefs the study purpose and research background.Chapter one presents theoretical framework. It begins with the discussion of the nature of language and is followed by key issues and theories of sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics which underlie the task-based instruction.Chapter two deals with the roles of teachers and of learners in communicative language classroom. Also the author examines the role of classroom instruction. It ends with the author's emphasis on the interaction.Chapter three starts with the definition of tasks and task-based instruction.
