The explanation of explanation is more important than explaination itself. Modernity'reconsideration has proven that it is unscientific that the old system of literature history cuts simply the new literature after the May Fourth Era into the modern literature and the contemporary literature. Therefore ,since the end of 80's and the beginning of 90's of the twentieth century, the proposing of " rewriting the history of literature" and "20th century's Chinese literature" more and more obtained the academic circles's wide approval. Precisely from this bigger integrity field of vision" of 20th century Chinese literature", the paper elaborates"the questioning and reconstruction to individualism in the feminine novels of the May Fourth Era"from the modernity angle. Might as well said that, this also is one kind of "rewriting".During the May Fourth Era, the call for"Enlightenment"and"Overall Westernization"encourages and opens the gate for the Chinese people to a new and modern society. However, it also contributes to those institutions that undervalue the multifaceted potentials of'the modern'. The discourses of modernity produced within the national discourse are liable to limit the methodology of reading the modern Chinese literature of the twentieth century. The participation of women in the formation of Chinese modernity is undeniably significant. Through women as Other, we are able to commence a synchronic and dialogic reading on the'other'possibilities in the imagining of Chinese modernity. The topic of this thesis is"the questioning and reconstruction to individualism in the feminine novesl of the May Fourth Era", the aim of which is to reinvestigate the interconnection between women's fiction produced during the May Fourth Era and the modernity of Chinese literature. The modern imagining of the May Fourth female writers connotes a"Female Modernity"which is different from male writers'modernity and yet to be explored in the discourses of modernity of the May Fourth era.
