The thesis analyzes the relationship among tradition, modernity, Chinese culture and Western culture, as well as the discussion of "aphasia" in the literary circles which popularly exists on Chinese literature criticism through describing the beginning and development of Chinese literature criticism in the early 1920s.There are four parts in the thesis.The part of preface introduces the purpose and main idea of the thesis. It's divided into two sections. Section One tells the purpose and importance of the theme. Section Two introduces other's main idea and the problems which are needed to be solved.Chapter One Wang Guowei and the Beginning of Chinese Modern Literary Criticism in the Early 1920s deals with the theme of the Western culture's affection on Wang Guowei and how deeply the idea of Wang Guowei's modern literary criticism affects the Chinese modern literary criticism in the early 1920s. This chapter is divided into two sections. Section One analyzes the influence of Western culture on Wang Guowei's idea of modern literature criticism by Wang Guowei's Commentary on the Red Chamber Dream and Wang Guowei's Renjian Cihua. Section Two introduces the relationship between the idea of Wang Guowei's modern literary criticism and the beginning of Chinese modern literary criticism in the early 1920s.Chapter Two The Termination of Traditional Literary Criticism and The Formation of Modern Literary Criticism in the Early 1920s concerns with the theme of the process that the traditional literary criticism has to give the place to modern literary criticism in the early 1920s. This chapter is divided into two sections. Section One analyzes the impossible development of Chinese traditional literary criticism, as well as the strong hoping of achievement the modernization of Chinese traditional literary criticism through studying the history background. Section Two analyzes the relationship among tradition, modernity, Chinese culture and Western culture by explaining the process of Chinese literary criticism in the early 1920s from tradition to modernity.Chapter Three is Summary: Tradition and Modernity. This chapter takes the theme of the relationship. This chapter is divided into two sections. Section One summaries the full modernization of Chinese literary criticism in the early 1920s. Section Two explains the relationship among tradition, modernity, Chinese culture and Western culture..
