The modern assessment of education attaches importance to the function of feedback and remediation. And the diagnostic test and score-report are the responses to the new expectation of modern education to the educational assessment. In this tendency, different cognitive diagnosis models have been developed in the field of Psychometrics. The rule-space model (RSM), developed by Kikumi Tatsuoka, is a famous one of them. With the application of statistical pattern recognition techniques, the rule-space model infers test-takers' response rules according to their actual response patterns, and classifies them into different attribute-mastery patterns, which describe the knowledge structure respectively. This research applies the rule-space methodology to exploring the linguistic attributes underlying the test-takers' performance in a multiple-choice test on the six basic color terms of modern Chinese. This is the first application of the rule-space model to Chinese language testing.
