His major achievement is his contribution to the development of dramatic monologue. The first chapter is a brief survey of Browning's life and works. Chapter Two expounds theories on the genre, including its definition, features and development. Chapter Three lists the main characteristics of Browning's dramatic monologues including the emergence of a persona, the shaping hand of the poet and double voices involved in Browning's dramatic monologue. Chapter Four discusses Browning's use of dramatic monologue as a good vehicle for psychological revelation. Chapter Five reveals the indeterminacy of interpretation of Browning's dramatic monologue. The last chapter is the conclusion, which asserts that Browning's experiment has redirected the poetic interest of English poetry and may be defined as "a revolution in taste". | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Robert Browning, Dramatic Monologue, Speaker | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
