Research On The Fictions In Xiaoshuo Shibao(Novel Times)

Xiaoshuo Shibao(Novel Times) was founded in September 1909, edited by Chen Jing-han(Chen Leng-xue) and Bao Tian-xiao in turns, published by Youzheng Press(Youzheng Shuju). This magazine had 33 normal serials plus one additional serial by the time when it was ended in November 1917. 1910s was a special era of modern China, but researches on this magazine are not incentive enough.These two aspects abstracted me to study it.This thesis is mainly about the modernity of the following types of literature in this magazine: marriage and love fictions, ironic social fictions, science fictions and nihility fictions. Different information in this magazine shows the complexity of the literary world in that era. Through it we can see something like: the unbalanced development of different literary types, the native literature's development influenced by tradition and stimulated by foreign literature, the concurrence of refined and popular taste, different kinds of experiments and pursuits for modernity, etc.
