Part of speech is the concentrative embodiment of one word's grammatical function. Different parts of speech have different grammatical characteristics. In the dictionary, marking the words with their part of speech is the most direct and effective means to illuminate their grammatical characteristics. In the former dictionaries words are not marked with part of speech. In recent years, with the continuous development and progress of Chinese language studies and Chinese language dictionary compilation, a group of modern Chinese language dictionaries with those marks has come out one after another. Correspondingly, the mark of part of speech has also become one of the hot issues of common concern among Chinese language grammar school and lexicographical work profession in recent years.The article first focuses on the analysis and comparison between the dictionaries with those marks and the former versions without those marks, and then through concrete examples discussed in the modern Chinese language dictionaries the meaning of marking words with part of speech.Second, this article makes a comparison and analysis on parts of speech system, marks for non-word forms and different judgments of part of speech of specific words in several representative dictionaries.Finally, the article points out several problems of marks of part of speech in some dictionaries in order to arouse the dictionary compilers attention to improve continuously the marks'quality of the Chinese language dictionary in the future.
