| Being the dessert in the history of literary, the essay becomes more and more popular as before, but few people study it systematically form the aspect of writing style. This article, falling into three parts, states some thoughts on the enlarged essay field and discusses the stylistic features of essay.The essay is used in a so broad sense that it losses the limit of stylistic features. And thus the vagueness arises. The field of essay is expanded limitlessly, which inevitably leads to the confusion in writing creation and affects the virtuous development of essay.As a independent type of writing, essay is connected with informal essay and prose and is also different from these two styles. They have similarities: short, intelligent and the free mentality of the writer. However, compared with informal essay which has political, social and commentary features, the essay has small subjects and shows charming, peaceful and free style of writing and rises to the highest elegant level.In the process of giving definition, the author, first on the basis of the theory of forming style and the reading practice, exploratorily advances many stylistic features of essay and then, from the norm, matching and pursuit of style, by inspecting the theory, analyzing the individual works and discussing the wrong understanding in creation, the author proves that essay has developed into a relatively mature style. It is an individual, intelligent, delicate and elegant style on the basis of prose.
