The Research On The Compilation And Academic Achievement Of The New Tang Book

The New Tang Book, 225 volumes, was compiled in Northern Song Dynasty by Ouyang Xiu , Song Qi and the others who received the emperor's orders. It systematically recorded 290 years history of Tang Dynasty and it was essential reference book to study history of Tang Dynasty. The New Tang Book's compilers started to compile it from the year 1044 and it took them nearly 17 years to finish it. Its Benji has 10 volumes, Zhi has 50 volumes, Tables have 15 volumes, and Biographies have 150 volumes. Originally it was named The Tang Book. But for distinguishing it from The Tang Book, which was compiled in Five Period Dynasty, the edition of Qing Wu Ying Dian formally began to use the name of The New Tang Book.The New Tang Book has great contribution in view of innovating writing form and substantiating contents. It resumed the style integrity of national history which included Benji, Zhi, Table, Biography and it established Bingzhi, Yiweizhi and Electionzhi which unexcited in former generation history records. At the same time it greatly enriched historical data and added more events than The Tang Book. It also reflected some progressive historiography thoughts on holding personnel in high regard but lighting God's will. These have profound influence to history records' compilation in later age. So the research on the compilation and the achievement of The New Tang Book has great significance.The article is on the basis of former generation scholars' research results.
