Placard which is a good assistant to us is applied in every aspect of our life. With the deepening and developing of reform and opening up to the outside world, China continuously strengthens communication with other countries, more and more placards should be translated into English. Studying on English translation of placard is a great value of reality.Placard is a particular applied text whose function is strong, and whose aim is prominent, so it is appropriate to select the translation methods according to the text's function and the translation's purpose. Therefore, this thesis approaches the effective translation techniques according to the functionalist translation theory. This thesis introduces the definition, classification, characteristics, devices of placard, and the differences between the Chinese and English placards. On the basis of these factors, the writer discusses the requirements for the translator, and the three principles: the translation should be guided by the functional criteria, the translation should be acceptable, and the translation should be accordant with English language and culture. According to analyzing a lot of examples, the writer concludes some translation techniques, such as communicative translation, amplification, omission, and coping translation. This thesis also analyzes the translation errors in the placard English translation in China. It puts forward the practical and effective measures on correcting these errors. These translation errors are always caused in the translation process of language, culture and functions. The main errors in language are improper words, Chinglish expressions, obscure translations. The errors in culture caused of neglecting the differences between the eastern and western cultures, so the translation is not accepted by the readers. If the translator doesn't attach importance to the placard functions, the translation will cause pragmatic failures, and it will be misunderstood by the foreigners.
