This article is researched on the modes of monosyllabic adjective used as modifier of noun and their restrict conditions in modern Chinese. Because the different senses of monosyllabic adjectives may lead different combination modes between monosyllabic adjective and noun, 554 monosyllabic adjectives were obtained from "Dictionary of Modern Chinese (the fifth edition, 2005)" according to their sense. After the comprehensive investigation of those 554 monosyllabic adjectives through the modern Chinese corpus of Peking University, those results are presented as follows:1. In all of 554 monosyllabic adjectives, 420 of them can modify nouns.2. Those 420 monosyllabic adjectives can be subdivided into 3 classes according to the combination modes between them and nouns which they modify.a) Class A: only the "AN" mode. When they modify nouns, the nouns must follow them directly. There are 227 monosyllabic adjectives in class A, and the percentage is 54.05%.b) Class B: "AN" mode or "A çš„N" mode. They can modify the noun not only directly like class A(AN), but also indirectly, that is, modifying the nouns by adding a word "çš„" in the end(A çš„ N). There are 172 monosyllabic adjectives in class B, and the percentage is 40.95%.
