On Monosyllabic Adjectives Of Color

The paper is a research into the semantics of adjective and noun combination, which meets the needs of Chinese Information Processing.The main method in NLP is statistical analysis, whose disadvantages lie in the inability to explain the conceptual combinations especially in language such as Chinese, which is concept-oriented. The main problem is not in the algorithm, but the semantic analysis of the conceptual analysis and classifying analysis of the language structure which expresses the concepts. Traditional structural analysis has founded the foundation for the analysis of language. With the development of the society and science, people require a high demand on the analysis of language. Therefore, the pure structural analysis is not enough for the NLP. We should delve into the semantic level and open the inner structure of the language intensions. The Semen analysis deals with the individual words mainly in a statistic way. The Case grammar mainly deals with the relationships between verbs and nouns. The semantic knowledge in Semantic web, ontology, WordNet, and HowNet and so on are static conceptual connections. In the language structure, the serious problem is the dynamic combination at level of conceptual semantics. The conceptual intensional theory focuses on the problems in semantics and has an analysis of the language units at different levels to cover the motive in the conceptual combinations.The paper is based on the research of conceptual intensional analysis. We have adopted the conceptual method, i.e. the conceptual analysis frame'Entity-Attributes-Values'to deal with the semantic problems in the combination of"adjectives +nouns"which are monosyllabic. The main problem is the attributes extraction, which is the motive for the combination as the basis for the semantic computation. This is the difficult points and the innovative points in the paper. Based on the previous works and literatures, the paper has an analysis of the polysemy of monosyllabic adjectives. We take advantage of rhetoric devices such as metaphor and metonym, and characterize the attributes with the A+N combinations, as well as the domains including the attributes. The purpose of this preliminary study is to provide the support for the basic linguistic knowledge and method.The remainders are arranged as follows. Section 1 is the preface, where the background, purpose, objects, the main points and the innovative points are discussed.Section 2 presents the related works and the have a new illustration of the phenomena from the approach of the conceptual intensional theory.Section 3 aims at the discovery of monosyllabic color adjectives in Chinese. More exactly, it will discuss the conceptual model and the method to analyze the basic meaning and the intensions.Section 4 presents the case study based on the dictionary as well as the corpus. Section 5 discusses the applications in the NLP and second language teaching.The last section is the paper's conclusion, which is a simple conclusion, and talks about the further research plan.
