In 1930s and 1940s, plagues happened in Sichuan every year, especially in East Sichuan, North Sichuan and Chengdu and around it. The chief plagues were Cholera, Smallpox, Typhoid or Typhus, Dysentery, Diphtheria, Scarlet Fever, Malaria, Measles and so on .Because of the worst health and medicine conditions, the lack of the notion of prevention, the plagues took place wantonly. People were in deep distress.In the middle and later stages of Republic of China, under the effect of becteria theory, the theory of plague progressed greatly. The pathogeny, the cause of disease and the mode spread were known scientificly.In order to prevent and cure the plagues,under the condition of the worst medicines, all circles in Sichuan took some effective measures yet. For instance,the government carried on campaigns of health and plague-prevention, vaccine injection, transport quarantine, epidemic sitution report and established temporary isolation hospitals,etc. Philanthropic organizations and some individuals also gave treatments, medicines and coffins actively. To a certain extent, these measures relieved people's ailment.In the couse of the plague prevention and treatment,the health and medicine facilities in Sichuan developed to a certain extent. Hospitals or clinics were set up in many counties or cities which took up over 90 percent in Sichuan. Medical technologies progressed unceasingly,and came up to advanced domestic standards.
