Linguistic communication always appears in textual form. And translation, as an inter-lingual and cross-cultural communicative activity, should automatically take text as its object. The process of translation is, in essence, a communicative process in which the translator comprehends a source language text (SLT) and then composes a target language text (TLT). The translator's top task is to produce a TLT which is maximally"equivalent to"its SLT pragmatically, semantically, stylistically and so on, so as to best serve the communicative purpose. Hence, translation and text are closely related.Since the rise of text linguistics or discourse analysis, the focus of translation study and practice has shifted from the isolated static words or sentences to the dynamic whole text. And textual awareness is a must in translation. Unfortunately, there are scholars in China studying translation at textual level, but textual awareness is rarely discussed systematically and intensively. What's more, most of them rest on theoretical study without involving practice, if any, involving only the translation from English to Chinese, seldom the translation from Chinese to English.To compensate this regret, the thesis, within the framework of text linguistics, attempts to have a systematic study of the relations between text and translation, the necessity and importance of textual awareness in translation. Also, textual awareness is given a new interpretation, namely, the translator's holistic view, contextual view and contrastive view in translation, and it stresses text is a whole entity and a hierarchy, and the translational operation of each rank should be carried out by taking its higher rank into consideration, and the entire text is the ultimate court of appeal in strategic decision making in translating and the evaluation of a translation.
