Research On Fictional Dialogue Translation From A Textual Aspect

One of the key tasks of a fiction is to create lifelike characters. As one of the most common and effective methods to figure personality, fictional dialogues also contribute a lot in developing plots, creating characters and revealing the theme. Classical dialogues enable their speakers to live in the readers'heart forever. In order to be faithful to the original work, to maintain its aesthetic value and to take the readers'feeling into account, it is quite necessary for translators to represent these dialogues in translation. However, to create lively and personalized dialogues in a fiction alone is a tough task, not to mention the difficulty in representing them. Being a burgeoning and energetic inter-discipline subject, text-based translation is drawing more and more concern and study with its practicability, fitness and applicability, which provides a new researching method to fictional dialogue translation.This thesis aims to carry out research on fictional dialogue translation from a textual aspect, combining with the case study of Vanity Fair translated by Yang Bi. By means of exploring the practical significance through specific translation examples, the possibility and necessity of applying relevant research fruits in text linguistics to the field of fictional dialogue translation study is proved.There are five parts in this paper. The first part makes a brief introduction to the importance of fictional dialogue translation research, the present situation in this field, the writing purpose of this thesis and its researching methods. The second part provides theoretical background by expounding relevant knowledge of text linguistics and fictional dialogue systematically and thus makes theoretical preparation for further study. The third part focuses on literary review, which offers comprehensive and detailed information about the original work, the translation work, the author and the translator. The forth part selects context and coherence as its study points and the research is carried on respectively with the help of supportive and specific examples. The last part makes a conclusion over the whole paper.
