Since the appearance of the Analects in more than 2000 years ago, the study on thisbook and its author......Confucius has never been stopped. Most of the study focused onhis philosophy thought and his political position. With the explanation of the later scholars, the character image of Confucius has changed a lot. Some scholars praised him as a saint, some depreciated his thoughts. As time went by, Confucius became a controversial figure; the real character image of him became more and more mysterious. Since the 20th century, people came to realize the literature value and prose achievement of the Analects, especially the vivid figures has been described in the book. I wrote this thesis based on the original version of the Analects in order to find out the real character of Confucius in history. Through the study of the Analects, 1 found that the character of Confucius was rich and abundant. He was not an affectedly virtuous person, but a live person with sorrow and happiness just like us. The greatest difference is that he had both the lovely character of the everyman and the superior quality of the saint.This thesis has two parts. In the first part, I analyzed the character image of Confucius. In the Analects, he has four roles. As a scholar, he was honest, confident and good at learning; as a tutor, he gave' us a lot of good teaching methods and himself was even tireless in teaching; as a man of honor, he was polite, firm and persistent; but as an everyman, he was humor and easy to get along with. In the second part, I discussed the expression techniques of the description of Confucius. The first kind expression technique is dynamic description, and it is the most important one in the book. The second one is static description. The author described the appearance, manner, clothing and daily life of Confucius directly. The third one is indirect portrait.
