Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is not only an outstanding English novelist but also an important precursor of modern feminist literary criticism of the 20th century. In order to break the traditional discourse pattern , deconstruct the death-dealing binary opposition of masculinity and femininity , search for women's own language , she posits the famous theory of androgyny in A Room of One's Own in 1929. Her creative view that"androgyny"was the best state for literary creation as well as a good way to dissolve differences between male and female almost runs through all her literary works. This view not only lays stress on masculinity in woman, but also put special emphasis on femininity in man. It provoked intense responses and longtime discussions among the literary world. When Virginia Woolf closely observed the differences between women and men in the field of life and writing , criticized the traditional fictions, evaluated the contemporary fictions, calculated the development of future fictions, she advanced a new theory of androgyny. The brand-new theory exerts a great influence in the literary and art circles, even in the whole society. The third part is : Influence and Worries——go from abstract principles to concrete practice. The birth of Virginia Woolf's theory of androgyny is a blessing in western literature of the 20th century. This avant-garde opinion of literary criticism not only had a directive impact on the women's literary creation at the time, but also indicated the trend of development of feminist literary criticism. This opinion has been treated with distain , and even met with refusal, but at...
