Androgyny is a quite ancient idea, while Virginia Woolf proposed it in the sphere of literature for the first time and constantly applied the idea to her creation of literary works.In Virginia Woolf’s opinion, this idea covers two aspects. One is that androgyny helps to achieve ideal personality as well as find more appropriate ways to get along with each other for male and female.The other is that androgyny as an essential creation state of writers. Only with such a state, could mind of a writer convey emotions without obstruction. Then satisfactory works will be created.This thesis,centered around Virginia Woolf’s idea of androgyny, based on social environment and family background, combined her wokes studied of her androgyny idea.This thesis consists of introduction, four chapters and conclusion.The first chapter is divided into three sections. Section one and section two deeply analyze her thought from aspects of what is the ideal personality and what is the ideal state of creation, by combining with researching Virginia Woolf’s prose works. The third section analyses the reason of forming Virginia Woolf’s idea of androgyny from the social environment, family background and so on.The second chapter is divided into two sections, the "ideal personality" creative theme and " ideal state of creation" creative theme. Combined with Virginia Woolf’s specific novels, the first section explores how to embody the theme "ideal personality" into their literary practice. Through two representative figures lily and Aolando, the second section focuses on exploring the "ideal state of creation" theme.The third chapter is divided into two sections, characters and literary images. The first section, combined with Virginia Woolf’ specific novels, explores the characters that have androgyny quality. The second section analyses how to express androgyny through "room", "Lighthouse" and other literary images in Virginia Woolf’s specific novels.The fourth chapter studies on value research of Virginia Woolf’s androgyny tosimply summarize and evaluate it from its historical status, significance and limitations.The conclusion part elaborates the research achievements and significance, as well as prospects for the Virginia Woolf’s androgynous research.
