Hue which is a kind of subtle visual effect, is generally born of the factors, such as the relationship between cold and warm colors, the contrast between light and shade as well as the impression of space. The criterion for evaluating a painting varies a lot, however, there are three basic elements which should be involved in assessing paintings, namely composition of pictures, hue, and space. These three factors together which supplement and complement each other can form an outstanding painting. Then, what kind of important role does hue play in an excellent painting? Further analysis is done based on the oil painting and line drawing in this article. For line drawings, hue is the relationship between black, white and gray, and the relationship between light and shade, and is the tool for sculpting, which can represent the sense of light, colors, texture, volume and space, and reflect the objective world more vividly. For oil painting, the concept and composition of hue is more complicate than that of line drawings. It is pertinent to the phases, brightness and purity of colors, and is the overall impression and inclination of colors produced by blocks of color which intertwine with each other to form an organic whole in pictures. But the most significant function of hue in pictures of oil painting lies in expressing emotions, namely that painters can deliver a kind of mood or emotion through the arrangement and disposal of hues. As a student studying the technique and teaching of oil paintings, I deeply understand that hues are pivotal to oil painting. Therefore, as analyzing the application of hues in line drawing and oil painting, I also integrate my own learning experiences, and summarize some detailed and specific skills of applying hues to drawing and oil painting, which are hoped to be helpful in future artistic education.
