The ci poem of Old Fisherman is a special "species" of ci poetry. The poets of the "species", by taking those secluded, carefree and bid-hearted fishermen and their lives as the composing objects, exhibit the joyfulness of sailing and fishing life and, convey their own seclusion preference and tastes. The mid Tang Dynasty ci poet Zhang Zhihe's five pioneering pieces of ci of Old Fisherman ushered in the booming age of the species, which spanned a long period of time from the mid Tang Dynasty to Yuan Dynasty and resulted in the biggest quantity of works with the richest types in Chinese ci poem history. In order to deepen the understandings of the ancient Chinese literati and gentries' two contradictory world outlooks of "out/in","progress/retreat","officialdom/seclusion", and of their attitudes towards and values about the real life, this thesis focuses its studies on the ci poems of Old Fisherman written in the period from Tang Dynasty to Yuan Dynasty(including Five Dynasties, Song Dynasty, Jin), probes into the factors leading to the creation and booming of the species and based on those poems and the images of old fishermen, examines the living philosophies and seclusion ideologies of the ancient Chinese literati and gentries who were imbued with traditional Chinese culture.
