Many college students feel completely puzzled about employing any other way to apply the coherent means in their translation. As translation problems either students or teachers come down to lexical opening, structural illogicality or artificiality, inaccurate words etc. Sometimes they even ignore the importance and the application of cohesion. Either teachers or students pay more attention to words, phrases or patterns than the internal cohesion. The author tries to explore the complicated application of cohesive ties and chains of Chinese College Students' English translation in this paper. The paper makes a contrastive study between the cohesion in English and Chinese for the purpose of teaching translation at college. According to the actual teaching circumstances in college, the author advances her personal perspectives about improving students' translation - hold and apply cohesive devices in contrast well and truly, in order to keep the version coherence. Examples are given to develop students' textual translation skills.This paper begins with a brief review of the past research in the theory of cohesion and contrastive transition, how to put the theoretic research outcome into teaching practice at college. Problems in students' translation work are listed, then are causes to these problems. Solutions about how to improving students' translation ability are analyzed in the following chapter.The author figures that we should improve the traditional teachingapproach, grasp the differences of cohesion between English and Chinese to make for the students have the perfectly acceptable expression in the target language. "In the act of translating, we are dealing with one translation unit after another. The translation unit is the smallest meaningful linguistic unit. It may be a word, a phrase, or sometimes, even a clause. In order to understand correctly the semantic meaning of each translation unit, it is necessary to analyze it in the discourse." (Qiu: 1989,21).
