Stylistic Characteristics Of English Scientific Contract And Its Translation

With economic globalization and great development of science and technology, China gets more opportunities to introduce into and transfer the advanced technologies. Scientific contract and its translation are becoming more and more important in daily life. But the specific study of the English scientific contract is limited. Aiming at solving this problem, this thesis based on the analysis of typical examples of standard English scientific contract, gives a concrete and detailed description of the stylistic characteristics of English scientific contract, and discusses the lexical, syntactic, grammatical and other characteristics of legal usages of contract English respectively.Scientific contract belongs to a type of formal document, while traditional translation theory only emphasizes strict literal translation. However, Functional Stylistics Theory (FST), as a modern stylistic theory, offers fresh methods to style translation. This thesis tries to employ FST to analyze and translate English scientific contract. FST contains three theories, Multi-strata theory, context theory and functional theory, which helps to deepen people's understanding of the essence of English scientific contract, make up for some deficiencies caused by traditional stylistic analysis and translation, and overcome the shortcomings of traditional translation. This thesis points out the essential goal of English scientific contract translation: not only the literal equivalence, but also to achieve functional equivalence.
