Stylistics is a branch of linguistics, which applies the theory and methodology of modern linguistics to the study of style and aims at revealing the expressive effect and the communicative function of language in specific context. Weblog is one of the latest genres of the Internet communication. To keep trend with the development of netspeak, it is urgently needed to make a systemic exploration and analysis on weblog language. Using the theory and methodology of stylistics to study the style of weblog is both theoretically and realistically important.This thesis, applying the theories and methodology of General Stylistics, attempts to analyze weblogs relating to daily topics from the perspectives of linguistic description, contextual factors and language effects with the facilitation of 35 weblog samples selected randomly from the website blo.gs.This thesis falls into six chapters.Chapter One clarifies the objective, the boundary, the significance, the methodology and the outline of this thesis.Chapter Two presents the literature review, covering the basic knowledge, development and previous research on both weblogs and stylistics. Meanwhile, the thesis prompts a review of research exploring language use in weblogs.Chapters Three, Four and Five are the main body of this thesis.Chapter Three makes a detailed linguistic description from graphological, syntactic and lexical levels, and summarizes the stylistic characteristics of weblogs at each level.Chapter Four analyzes the weblogs from contextual perspective, i.e. field of discourse, tenor of discourse, and mode of discourse.Chapter Five explores the effects of weblog language and prospects the future of blogging.Chapter Six is the conclusion, summarizing the whole thesis and offering some suggestions for future research on weblogs.
