It is a study on variety of nouns' semantic meanings and syntactic functions. Mainly applying the theory of "Three Plane", the dissertation makes a combination of semantic analysis and syntactic functions studies. On the semantic analysis, it takes the related theories of Cognitive Linguistics to explain the relations among different items of one noun's entry, or to analyze the semantic features. On studies of syntactic functions, the distribution theories of structuralism are applied to describe the syntactic collocations of those items, and also show the different semantic categories that the other words in collocation belong to.Chapter 1 is an introduction to the study, including reasons of writing, objects of the study, the methods and theories applied, and also its framework.Chapter 2 is a study on variety of nouns' semantic meanings, including two parts:(1) for the items of one noun's entry that haye been listed on the dictionaries("having-listed items" in this dissertation), we analyze the derivation relations and methods among the different items.(2) for the items of one noun's entry that have not been listed on the dictionaries("not-listed items" in this dissertation), we find out their difference on semantic features.Besides, this chapter inquires into the reasons, and believes that there are two reasons: the basic reason, it is out of human beings' needs to recognize things and master concepts; the effect of activation by contexts comes out to be the direct reason.Chapter 3 is a study on variety of nouns' syntactic functions. It chooses three kinds of nouns, including information-vehicle nouns, animal-food nouns, and organization-place nouns. It observes the difference between different items on syntactic functions, and even if on the same syntactic function, the words collocated with those items belong to different semantic categories. This chapter also makes an inquiry into the reasons, and holds the following points of view: the existence of variety of nouns' semantic meanings is the internal reason and also its motive power. The restriction effect of other words in different level collocation relations proves to be the external factor.Chapter 4 is the conclusion.
