This thesis makes some comments regarding the research about nominalization of English verbs, studying the process that English verbs change from V-ing to gerund V-ing, the process that from gerund V-ing to nominals from the perspectives of syntactic functions, syntactic constructions and semantic roles. Also this thesis is to analyze the nominal features of each phase in the changing process, namely the nominal features of gerund V-ing and the functions, syntactic constructions and semantic roles of nominal V-ing. The terms mainly mentioned in the thesis are as follow:gerund V-ing, present participle V-ing, nominal V-ing and nouns.English V-ing has two functions as one basic form, namely present participle V-ing and gerund V-ing, the present participle V-ing functions as being a verb and an adjective, whereas the gerund V-ing functions as a verb and a noun. This thesis is to do with the nominal features of English V-ing form and we need to take the gerund as the key, since it has the nominal feature. First we need to find the syntactic restrictions and semantic restrictions of gerund V-ing so as to distinct the gerund V-ing from present participle V-ing and to reach the goal of studying the nominal features of gerund V-ing in the aspects.of syntactic functions, syntactic constructions and semantic roles. As the gerund V-ing becomes nominal V-ing, the writer made the distinctions and classifications for nominal V-ing which has also been marked by the feature of noun and ends with-ing. However this sort of nominal V-ing is quite different from the nouns. In the paper the nominal V-ing is divided into two types, one of which has the same syntactic and semantic features as nouns, it has its own inflectional form, has the feature of being signifier and signified and also it has the one-to-one relation to the substances in the actual world. Whilst, the other type of nominal V-ing conveys the meaning of some act, process, event or result. The writer will do the contrastive study of nominal V-ing and nouns, finding out the differences between them, the key solutions are in the aspects of syntactic functions, syntactic constructions and semantic roles so as to find out the reasons why nominal V-ing become nouns and explain the reasons.
