The lexical cohesion means a connection between two or more lexical meanings cross-syntax, which is the deciding factor to form a texture in the text. It is thought that the study of textual cohesion is in some case the study of lexical cohesion. The study in this paper begins with the deficiency of the lexical cohesion nowadays: one is people describe it only in form, but lack of doing research on its functional mechanism, so that the description on form is one-sided. The other is lack the essence of lexical cohesion, so that the study is only on the surface without any further research. The aim of this study is to find the nature and its functional mechanism of lexical cohesion in modern Chinese text. The understanding of a certain part in the text needs the help of other part in the text, which are the essence of the lexical cohesion and the cognitive foundation of cohesion. Once one part referent another part and it is understood by readers, those two parts are connected. With the understanding of lexical cohesion, the author thinks that lexical cohesion has a duality. On one hand, it confirms the reference, which is based on the theory of description words. But this theory cannot be used directly because many units in language are provided by context without any form. On the other hand, lexical cohesion means semantic correlation. The study of lexical cohesion will help arranging the internal connections of the context. Lexical cohesion includes the internal and external cohesion of chunk of meaning .
