Analysis Of Tian Yan Lun From The Perspective Of Deconstruction

The twentieth century has been viewed as "the age of translation", and the latter half of it might be characterized as period that experiences a boom in translation theories, which provides many new perspectives for translation studies.Deconstruction is also called post-structuralism or postmodernism, which is a revolt against structuralism. It systematically undoes the structural ideology about structure and meaning. Deconstruction challenges the traditional translation criterion—"faithfulness". In deconstructionists' opinion, no work belongs to original creation; and all of the works are intertextual to each other. It decenters the text, indeterminats its meaning, and fluctuates the basis of "faithfulness" principle. They also think that the textual meaning of works is not owned by itself, but is the production of readers' reading. Deconstruction denies the traditional duality relationship—author and translator, original text and translation.Yan Fu, an important translator, is the "first" man who introduced the fundamental classics of modern science and modern capitalism. His translation relates to evolution, economics, logic, sociology, law, etc. One of his most influential translations is Tian Yan Lun, whose original is Evolution and Ethics, by T.H.Huxley.As we all know, there are many differences between his translation and the original text, the former relating to the style of classics of pre-Qin dynasty, that of Zhuangzi, Laozi, and so on, based on Chinese traditional philosophy; while the original relating to learning, based on modern science.This dissertation will study Tian Yan Lun from the perspective of deconstruction.
