A Closer Study Of Xinghe And Yihe In English And Chinese

There being much confusion and misunderstanding about xinghe vs. yihe and hypotaxis vs. parataxis contrasts among Chinese scholars of English, the present thesis makes clear at the outset the point that xinghe and yihe in Chinese are not equivalent to hypotaxis and parataxis in English. Following such clarification are our descriptions of the yihe tendency in Chinese and the xinghe tendency in English at different linguistic levels, on the basis of which we apply the results of our contrastive analysis to E-C/C-E translation, emphasizing that the difference between the two languages is to be reflected in translation on the one hand but care must be taken not to go to extremes.The major points discussed in the thesis are presented as follows: 1. Xinghe and yihe in Chinese and hypotaxis and parataxis are not equivalent pairs. Firstly, at the syntactic level, Xinghe and yihe normally refer to the ways of connection regardless of whether the relationship between the units to be joined is in coordination or subordination, whereas hypotaxis means subordination only. That means xinghe can embrace both coordination and subordination, but hypotaxis can only be used to refer to subordination.
