It has been generally assumed, in the field of foreign language learning and teaching there are various factors which influence language learning. Such factors are involved as age, gender, personality, motivation, learning style, and learning strategies. This thesis is a study of learning strategies that may affect the learners' listening competence.It is a study of the listening strategies employed by a group of non-English majors in Shandong University. The study aims to investigate strategy preferences among research respondents in listening comprehension, to compare the differences of listening strategy use between high proficiency group and low proficiency group, and explore the relation between listening competence and listening strategy training.The questionnaire used to measure the frequency of listening strategy use is developed by the author, on the basis of SILL and Young Learners' Language Strategy Use Survey-Listening Section by Oxford and Language Strategy Use Inventory by Cohen & Chi. The questionnaire consists of five categories: metacognitive strategies, form-focused strategies, meaning-focused strategies, using-mother-tongue strategies and social/affective strategies. Data are collected and analyzed by means of SPSS 13.0 for Windows.Statistical analysis shows up the following findings. Firstly research respondents most frequently use form-focused strategies (vocabulary and grammar strategies) and meaning-focused strategies while metacognitve strategies are lest commonly used; secondly effective listeners from high proficiency group use more meaning-based strategies (like inferencing, note-taking, imagery etc.) while ineffective listeners from low proficiency group depend more on vocabulary strategies and...
