"Fa Yuan Chu Lin"(法苑ç æž—)is a kind of Buddhist book completed at the beginning of Tang Dynasty. In Japan and Taiwan, the research of this subject started early. At present, the research of"Fa Yuan Chu Lin"in the mainland mainly concentrates on an encyclopedia, the Buddhist book and the philosophical level. The related research is not deep, especially in the literature sphere. The thesis intends to solve the related questions, which exist in the literature research by studying the author, the first edition and the miracle-novel materials in"Fa Yuan Chu Lin". The preface introduces the current research situation in the academic circles, and defines the whole research scope. The thesis accepts the classification of the miracle-novel in the present academic circles, and refers to the massive ancient novels editions. The other related questions will also be explained in the preface.Part one is the study of the author and the first edition. This part is divided into two chapters.Part one, chapter one makes following three conclusions:First of all, monk Tao Hish(释é“世)was born before the fifteenth year of Kai Huang in Sui Dynasty, and died in the first year of Hong Tao in Tang Dynasty. His age should be 87 at least. The view of Mr. Su Jin-ren(è‹æ™‹ä»)should be studied again.Secondly, there are two views about the time of his entering into religion in the academic circles: the childhood or the later years. As far as I concerned, he became a monk in his childhood more indubitable. The understanding of Liu Yu-song(刘毓崧)and Chuan Kou Yi Zhao(å·å£ä¹‰ç…§), a Japanese scholar, lacks sufficient evidence.Thirdly, the related record of monk Tao Hish, the author of"Fa Yuan Chu Lin", is Xuan Yun. The posterity thinks it goes by his courtesy-name due to evade a taboo about the Emperor of Tang Li Shi-min. However I think Xuan Yun starts from"Catalogues of Tang Buddhist scriptures"(大å”内典录). The name of Xuan Yun comes along with the tradition in ancient times and Tao Xuan's individual habit. The record of Xuan Yun comes after"Catalogues of Tang Buddhist scriptures", and the saying of "evade a taboo" begins from Zan Ning"Biography of Eminent monks in Song Dynasty". It has its time background. The posterity was obedient to the authority. So it was handed down generation after generation. In brief, the view of " evade a taboo" is not feasible.
