The musical exchange between China and Britain in modern times is an important component part of Sino-Western musical exchange in the late one and a half century. With the historical changes in modern Chinese music, it has passed a long history and shown the characteristics of three different stages. China and Britain share the richness in the musical exchanges, which has contributed to important influence to Chinese music and to some degree propelled the emergence and development of Chinese contemporary new music. Besides, the musical exchange enhances the civil friendship of the two countries and also exerts a certain impact on British musical culture.On the basis of historical materials, drawing references from the subject thinking such as music or history and from the musical exchange in double direction, this paper sums up and analyses the musical exchange between China and Britain in aspects of music import and export by means of historical data, investigation, analysis, comparison etc. and gives the initial organization and research about the history of the musical exchange between China and Britain during 1793-1949. This paper also discusses the long history, rich contents and main influence about the musical exchange between China and Britain by three different stages, doing everything to sort out the historical ideas, so as to understand its basic features and its status and role in the musical history between China and Britain.
