Shidaiqu, meaning Shanghainese modern music of the time, in the 1920s to 1940swas an important part of the citified culture in Shanghai’s modernization process. It wascharacterized then as popular, commercial, intermediate, entertaining, etc. At that time,Shidaiqu was widely disseminated as radio music, movie soundtrack, dance music andother modern cultural forms. It reflected the humanities of the democratic music cultureof the modern city, which maintained the dialogue between the cultural diversity withcivilian in the whole society. Therefore, this dissertation attempted to interpret thehumanistic and practical significance of Shidaiqu by searching its origins anddevelopment progresses in both synchronic and diachronic coordinates. Thereby, thisdissertation aimed to raise people’s attention and objective evaluation on Shidaiqu. Inaddition, the dissertation wished to provide some useful information for the futurescholars who are interested in the research questions such as‘pop music’and‘urbanization of folk music’in the Chinese modern contemporary music history and theurban music history.
