There are lots of escapers in the works of O'Neill at the middle and latter stage ,Who is the Father of modern American drama..Most of them are the loser of life and they can't pull themselves out of the severe spiritual crisis. The series of images can be classified into three kinds in the order of depth. The people of the first kind suffer some setbacks ,like daydreams,and yearn for the Utopia .The second kind peole have the clear conscious of escaping the reality,making the daydreams with the alcohol .The third kind people have the severe conscious and actions of self-closing. The thesis focuses on the second and third kind people. Who express definitely the wish of hiding and having hiding physically and spiritually.Not unique but as a double,O'Neill broke off the relations from the outside world,spending the late age in the way of self-closing. The author hold that there are certain relations between many escaper emerging from the O'Neill's works and O'Neill's self-closing in his life.The thesis mainly analyses the ideology of the escaper of the three most representative work,discussing the different meaning and value tropism, concluding the reasons of the self-closing on the escaper, and then we can dialyze the three aspects of the his experience ,social environment and religional tradition.
