Dialogue is a way of communicating emotion in daily life and also a way of philosophical and aesthetic thinking. In West, the study on dialogue has lasted a long time, including not only its application and development in style but also its construction in philosophy. The theory of dialogue blossoms in the 20th century, developing from a philosophical thinking and a kind of style into a mature theory, and later being applied to literary commentary circle. This should be attributed to both Bakhtin's construction of dialogue theory and the refinement and development by those after him. Barkhtin's dialogue theory covers area of philosophy, aesthetics, sociology, linguistics and literature. This thesis explains his theory from different layers which correspond with each other. Limited by this author's major and this thesis' space, the thesis, starting from the background in which Bakhtin's dialogue theory took buds, interprets it from a literary angel. Bakhtin breaks through the fetters of general linguistics and emphasizes language's social nature and the dialogue nature. The value of Bathtin's dialogue theory lies in that it breaks through general linguistics' constraints, emphasizes language's social nature and discourse nature, moreover. Based on his dialogue theory, Bakhtin explores the dialogue nature of literature itself. This kind of dialogue nature can be mainly divided into polyphony theory and carnivalization theory. The proposal of them is Bakhtin's dialogue theory's essence in literary criticism.David Lodge is a well-known contemporary British literay novelist and literay He is famous for his study on structuralism and Mikhail Bakhtin's novelist theory in literary criticism circle. In 1990, he published a collection of "After Bakhtin: Essays on fiction and criticism". Since then, intentionally or unintentionally, he applied dialogue theory to his creation. His novels embody the artistic characteristics of dialogue, such as the set of dialogue system, polyphony in language, synchronic structure and composite style. By employing the dialogue theory, Lodge's works break through the constraints from authoritative discourse and permeates with dialogue spirits of manifold voices' co-existence.This thesis is made up of 2 parts. In the first part, it firstly combs the dialogue theory's developing course from an ideological concept and a kind of style into a theory concerned by most people and imposing wide and deep influences on literature and society, then focuses its analysis on two cornerstones of Baktin's dialogue theory: polyphonic novel theory and carnivalization poetic theory. In the second part, by combining Lodge David's dialogue criticism for the first time, it also analyzes Lodge's approval and development of Bakhtin's dialogue theory. Besides, the second part, in connection with dialogue theory, also analyzes the dialogue arts in Lodge's novels from the 3 aspects of dialogue system, dialogue forms and dialogue spirits, which will be of pioneering spirit for locating Lodge's artistic characteristics. This thesis, based on theoretical research and taking Lodge David as well as his works as its study cases, explores unique dialogue artistic features in his works, so that it is significant to both dialogue theory itself and its application to literary criticism. Meanwhile, it is also an important approach of revealing dialogue theory's influences' on modern society and literary art, which make the thesis bring an enlightenment to modern fiction research.
