A Study Of "Otherness" And "Selfness" In The Chinese Translation Of "The White Tiger" From The Perspective Of Post-colonialism

Written by the Indian writer called Aravent Adigar,The White Tiger is a novel with rich post-colonial elements.Past translation studies of post-colonial perspectives usually focus on the adaption and rewriting of Western countries when Western translators are translating literary works of Third World countries.However,these researches rarely take the translators of third-world countries as the subject.This study aims at perfecting the theory of post-colonial translation,centering on a Chinese translator,and on the basis of refining and making use of the concept of“Otherness”.The Chinese translator and his thinking activities are regarded as the“Selfness”,including the contents of original texts correspond to his culture;the contents that is inconsistent with the translator's own country and culture are regarded as the“Otherness”.The “Otherness” examined in this study are mainly embodied in the novelThe White Tiger.The relationship of the translator and the original work is a relationship between he “Selfness” and the “Otherness”.By observing the reservations of the “Otherness” components,the highlights of the translator's “Selfness” only reflect in the selection of text structure and domestic vocabularies.Although there are some ideological expressions of the translator,he does not intend to shape the image of the “Otherness”.However,due to the insensitivity to the“Otherness” in post-colonial discourse of the original texts,the translator unconsciously erases the existence of these words which contain post-colonial factors.This thesis provides a new focus by studying the Third World translators' understanding,rewriting,and reflection of post-colonial literary works.By analyzing the reflection of the“Otherness” components and its interactions with the “Selfness” and seeking the balance between the “Selfness” and the "Otherness",we can consider about whether Orientalism or Westernism is the center of the situation.This study is a supplement of post-colonial theory and post-colonial translation studies.
