This paper reports an empirical study of the use of English learning strategies by Chinese higher vocational students. It examines and analyses the overall frequency with which they employ learning strategies. The relationship between learning strategies and two variables (gender , 12 proficiency )also examined through SPSS statistical analysis system. The quantitative analyses of the data generated the following major findings:1) The overall use of learning strategies of the subjects falls into low -frequency scale. Of the four categories of learning strategies related to overall English study, the learning strategies employed most frequently by the subjects are form-focused strategy and mother tongue-dependence strategy, followed by matecognitive strategy, with function-focused strategy the least frequently used. Of the five categories related to language skill study, the learning strategies employed most frequently are writing strategy, reading strategy and lexicon strategy, followed by listing strategy, with speaking strategy the least frequently used.2) The results also show that except the matecognitive strategy, females adopt the learning strategies more often than males do. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that gender has more effect on language strategy use than English proficiency does.3) This study finds that except mother tongue -dependence strategy and speaking strategy, the remaining strategies there are significant variances in students' English proficiency by the remaining strategies. Among these strategies, form-focused strategy, reading strategy, and writing strategy has significantly association with students' English proficiency level, predicting their English achievements. Finally the paper discussed and analyzed the cause of the research results.
