The relations among culture, language and translation are so intimate that they can not be separated. Nowadays the translation research has shifted from the linguistic level to the cultural level and the translation activity has been widely considered as the intercultural communication. The cultural differences loaded or implied in the source language and the target language are more inclined to failures of intercultural communication than the pure linguistic differences. So it needs more attention to deal with the cultural differences between the source language and the target language.Generally speaking, there are two translation strategies in dealing with cultural differences: foreignization and domestication. After the functional notion was put forward by the German Functionalism School, a great many studies have been conducted by relating text functions to translation theories. Among them, the text type theory, posed by the British translation theorist Peter Newmark, takes a prominent place. It focuses on the correlation study of text types and translation strategies. Based on the study of Bühler, Newmark classifies the texts into three main types, namely the expressive, informative and vocative text. In addition, he names the translation method"semantic translation"and"communicative translation". In his opinion, semantic translation is preferred in the expressive text while communicative translation is preferred in the informative and vocative text. In the thesis they are grouped into the terms of"foreignization"and"domestication".The thesis aims to apply Peter Newmark's text type theory to the translation of cultural differences of three main text types in order to examine its feasibility. The author chooses the serious literature work, news reports and the commercial advertisements as the representative text types.
