On The Literature Friendship Between Zong Bai-hua And Guo Mo-ruo

Zong Bai-hua and Guo Mo-tuo, the two famous figures in China modern literature, have outstanding differences in individual personality and the fields of scholarly achievements. However, the two men of great differences are intimate friends. This paper will, from the perspective of their literature friendship, make an analysis upon their personalities, styles, pursuits, ideologies and achievements, so as to find out the common points in their depth of life nature.This paper will divide into three parts.The first part, from the first communication between them, is to give a general account to their communication expressions and the reasons for their communication. The former demonstrates in that Zong Bai-hua published Guo's poems, they communicated by letters for the discussion of poems, and then formed a trinity with the joining of Tian-Han. As to the latter, the then social surroundings provided a common platform for their communication and they have the same spiritual pursuit and aesthetic foundation.The second part talks about Zong's theory of life aesthetics and Guo's theory of life poetics and the similarities and differences between them. The similarities demonstrate in happy childhood life, Chinese and Western philosophic base, surpassing-time-and-space universal awareness and everlasting life rhyme of creation. The differences demonstrate in their attitudes towards life and concrete creation of poems.The last part gives an account of their communication in the later period. For different individual pursuits, they chose two different life roads. Zong chose a road of scholar life with an emphasis on detachment, while Guo chose a road of politic life with an emphasis on social fame. Though in different life roads and with little communications in the later period, they are still are good friends.There is a concern of life in their poems, which demonstrates visibly when in close communication and invisibly when in less communication. There are life resonance and rhyme in the depths of their mind, which is the internal reason for their life friendship.
