| Since the 90's of last century, the documentary industry in China has been stuck in a depression, which has sparked the study on the market orientation of Chinese documentary. To establish a market-oriented system of documentary production has been expected to be a solution to the depression in this industry. However, the efforts to build a market-oriented system have not boomed the development of Chinese documentary so far. Why? This study looks at the development of documentaries in different cultures and gives an overview of documentary development in terms of culture, communication and market. Based on the findings of the cultural and aesthetic features of documentaries representing different cultures, this study explores the problems that documentary industry is facing in the market-oriented system. The absence of the elements of humanity in documentaries and the incomplete cognition of the basic principles and values of documentary should draw as much attention as the market itself.
