The first TV documentary of our country was created in1958, up to now, the historyof Chinese TV documentary has been passed more than half a century, but few of theworks were excellent ones. Nowadays, with the improvement of the internationalcommunication and the Chinese international status, strengthening the internationalbroadcasting of our country’s culture is more and more important. As a kind of culturalproduct which can be used in international communication, the TV documentary canreflect one period of Chinese development history truthfully, write down the context ofsome event which carries huge implications, or tell the long civilization of China,it is thebest thing which can be used to tell the other country about the social and national cultureof China. So it’s very important in international cultural communication. In recent years,Chinese scholars come to realize the influences of the TV documentary on the State SoftPower, so how to go out of the development puzzles, how to meet the audience’s interest,and how to implement the marketization soon, are the top issues in the documentaryresearch.However,《A Bite of China》was made a huge success since the broadcast. Thisphenomenon appeals many scholars to analyze the reasons behind its succeed. In theirresearches, they focus on the cross-cultural communication strategy and the image of agreat country, but the underlying factors——the audience demands and the psychologicalbehaviors——are ignored. So in this paper, the main research content and research objectare the audience of 《A Bite of China》, through a series of research and analysis whichare focused on the audiences of the most successful documentary in China, to find theaudience real demands, then we can find the what factors cause the low rating, andconclude some advices about the market development of the Chinese TV documentary.
