Exercise is very important in teaching Chinese as a second language, and the research on the exercises of textbooks is very meaningful.In this paper, the author will investigate and analyze the exercises in five elementary Chinese reading textbooks which were representative in different times in the history of Chinese teaching. The investigation and analysis will be based on the theory framework of exercise research put forward by Professor Lu Bisong in 1996, and be carried out in three respects: exercise aim, exercise content, exercise form.The main conclusions are as follows:1,Exercise aim. Generally, training reading competence is the common aims of the five textbooks. But, besides this, ELEMENTARY CHINESE READING COURSE (complied by Zhang Shitao, 2002) also emphasizes the language learning aim, and this is a progress in the understanding of reading teaching aim.2,Exercise content. First, context and word are the common exercise focal points of every textbook; second, the development of the exercise content experienced from stressed the context only to emphasize the context and word at the same time.3,Exercise form. The total number of the exercise form is 18, and select, judge, answer, fill a vacancy, and find out are the main forms in which.On the investigation results, and on the basis of some relative theories and some results of scholars'researches, the author puts forward some referential suggestions for the future elementary Chinese reading textbook compliers.
