The compilation of teaching materials is composed of three links: text, syntax notes and exercise. As the soul of teaching materials, exercise plays an indispensable and important role among these three links. Even it's said that "The teaching materials of a new generation should be an elaborately compiled exercise collection". Therefore, this article carries out comparatively detailed quantitative statistics and analysis on the teaching materials for elementary Chinese reading course from the contents of exercise and setting of question types these two aspects.In terms of contents of exercise, firstly, this article carries out overall statistics and analysis on all contents which will be examined through the exercise, then we do more specific research on the exercise contents in "Research on Chinese Characters Exercise" and "Research on Vocabulary Exercise" these two chapters, from which, we find out the rules and existing common problems in compiling exercise contents of teaching materials, and we analyze the reasons as well.In terms of question types of exercise, this article proceeds from two points of view. One is to statistically analyze the selection quantity of question types, and the other is to classify the question types with three modes which are the type of memorization after comprehension, imitate mechanically and application, thereby to do research on the question types again from the view of such modes. On the basis of research and analysis, this article summarizes the rules in setting question types of exercise, find out the existing problems and then analyzes and evaluates them.Through the research, we find that different teaching materials have something common in the contents of exercise and setting of question types and have their own characters meanwhile. From such commonness and characters, we find out the basic rules and development trends in compiling the exercises of teaching materials for elementary Chinese reading at present, meanwhile, we also find out its disadvantages On the basis of statistics, research and summarization, this article takes linguistics theory, psychology theory and constructivism theory as theoretical gist and put forward design idea and reference opinions on design and compilation of Chinese characters and vocabulary exercise so as to provide reference for the compilers of teaching materials.
