As one member in the 5th generation, the director Zhang Yimou hascreated one myth and another in the light and shade world from the verybeginning when his movie Red Sorghum won prize. Zhang Yimou'sunremitting artistic exploration accelerates Chinese domestic movies intothe door of the circle of artistic palace. Therefore, he belongs to not onlythe pure film kingdom in China but also the noticeable cultural landscapein present age.This thesis consists of 3 chapters. With literature analysis and textanalysis, the paper discusses the survival wisdom and artistic feature forZhang's productions, evaluates his value orientation, esthetics form andstyle, and works out his profound influence on domestically producedmovies with the methods of deduction and induction, so as to have acomprehensive examination to his works from esthetics angle.Chapter One mainly studies his value orientation in Zhang's moviecircle. With the historical context, the body sums up from several aspects:humanities concern, cultural criticism, post-colonial writing andconnection with art and commerce and so on.Chapter Two puts emphasis on his artistic form. Fromprimary-condition-actor, color, composition to lens utilization, Zhangcreates new movie language and has made his unique artistic feature.Chapter Three tries to interpret Zhang Yimou's films, probes hismovie style and how it produces from legend, reality and aestheticism offilm.In brief, the thesis draws the conclusion: it has the important model significance to study Zhang Yimou's movies both in artistic andcommercial exploration, which helps Chinese movie or even Chineseculture into the world under the global linguistic environment.
