| This thesis, on the basis of comparative method, is mainly engaged in the discussion of theoverseas and mainland studies of Eileen Zhang from four aspects. Firstly, in the confrontation ofideologies, centering on the argument about The Rice-Sprout Song and Naked Earth, EileenChang and Lu Xun, it analyzes each side's different positions and critical strategy. Secondly, inthe conflict of literary concepts, focusing on the relation between consciousness and writingskills, it discusses each side's emphasis on female consciousness and writing skills and also theirdifferent literary concepts, critical methods and stands based on Eileen Chang's female writing.Thirdly, as to modernity of Chinese literature, based on the discussion of China and the West,tradition and modernity, it reveals their competition in the field of May 4th literature, theconfrontation, respective dilemma and final fusion of the east and west discourse. Finally,viewing the overseas Chinese critics as a whole, this thesis, taking C.T. Hsia as a representative,analyzes his visual angles, academic methods and critical stand different from mainland scholars,then reveals the deep cause of the difference—the overseas Chinese critics' dual cultural identity,wandering between China and the West and their marginalized academic attitude. At last, thisthesis explains the reason for Eileen Chang's being the property of overseas diaspora and return.In a word, this dissertation tries to discuss the unique meaning of the overseas Chinese critics,the communication, collision and integration between the mainland and overseas Chinesescholars in their studies of the 20th century Chinese literature, and the birth of the new pattern ofliterary study, in order to offer some thoughts to Chinese literary critic in the age of academicglobalization. |
