This article uses the theoretical framework of modernity to study the development of modern Chinese literature since the May 4th New Culture Movement.After seeing the theoretical defect caused by dualistic opposition,which "May 4th" new literature used to deal with the twin concepts like " tradition/modern" and" orient/west",this paper found that Eileen Chang's novels are a good examples to breakthrough in this defect.This paper will take the history of literature integrally to look through the modernity of Eileen Chang's novels.Eileen Chang was a writer who had strong confidence of traditional Chinese culture.And she was good at searching for resources from traditional literature.Therefore,Eileen Chang's works in the novel collection,Legend,depicting a unique road of Chinese society's modernization.Chinese tradition shows faint but powerful force in support on the 'road'.And,Eileen Chang described 1940's Chinese society as a hybrid of modern and tradition,orient and west.The desolate atmosphere conveyed by her novel makes Eileen Chang's works full of ironic style.In addition,these ideas of Eileen Chang are expressed through her skilled narrative skills.Due to the change of authoring environment,"self-translation" and "rewriting"became the main theme of Eileen Chang's later writing.Eileen Chang failed to be successful English writer in the United States,because her English expression cannot be understood by the readers of English world.Her English appeared in too much"hard translation" and "non-English" expression.Zhang Ailing tried to attract western readers by the surprising factors of Chinese.But,her efforts failed due to her focus on Chinese culture.In addition,Eileen Chang wrote about her own story of the past over and over again,which indicates her " non-linear " view of modern.Finally,the conclusion is that Eileen Chang stands in the position of Chinese cultural.From the perspective of her novel's modernity,she absorbs modern ideas and agrees that traditional culture has its unique value.
