Liu Qingbang is famous for his short stories in Chinese literary circles. His short stories can always acquire many various awards. But he has been seldom causing people's concern today because short stories cannot be in a dominant position in the cultural market. Even so, he still insists on the pursuit of literary ideal, boycotts the comme- rcializing of literature, sticks to cultivating silently in his own garden.The thesis intends to analyze novels of Liu Qingbang who is from He Nan of China from the angle of tragedy consciousness. The basic train of thought is that, firstly, to give a whole summary to writing style and characteristic of the writer, then to expound the expression of tragedy consciousness in his novels thoroughly by analyzing. Moreover, analyzing how and why this tragedy conscious- ness generates, combining the writer's career in his life.In the first part I want to expound the aesthetic characteristic in the process of the writer's creation first. Liu Qingbang once narrated his two fundamental styles in his novels: Cruel and soft. In his soft and beautiful novels, the stories'plot is relatively composed and placid. The affairs develop more gently. The characters'emotion is depicted comparatively finely and smoothly. All the stories have little conflict and contradictions, and appear peaceful and sad on appreciation of the aesthetic mentality. There are full of poetry in the stories which display slight sorrow on the desolate detail. The cruel and fierce novels regard revenge as principle subject matters. They mainly describe the cruelty of killing, announce the evil and ugly nature of human beings. His novels seldom relate to description of characters'mentality. All the personages have strong activism. The novel's rhythm has been accelerated obviously. The writer uses a kind of line drawings skill drawing outline of personages, the narrative tone is very cold, and involves little emotion from the writer. He would like to reveal the characters'personality by describing their actions and conversations. Therefore, this novels show a cruel and fierce style. Why can the two kinds of entirely different styles be displayed in writer's literary creation system. The reason is that his works are running through the same mood, i.e. deeply tragedy consciousness permeates in most works of him, which can form his unique individuality.The second part explains the content of tragedy consciousness, and describes one's expression in the works. Taking a comprehensive view of Liu Qingbang's novels, which can be divided into four types of tragedies substantially: Tragedies caused by times and society's, animal's tragedies caused by mankind, human nature's tragedy and mind tragedy.The main mean of times and society's tragedy is that race mental state, cultural tradition, customs and habits, and social force give rise to the tragedy of individual. These things are directly thorough people's heart world, and can be changed into people's unconsciousness. When people breach these strengths, they will suffer from injury inevitably, and tragedy will follow. There are still another kind of tragedy which takes place because of the ages and society, which is the influence that modernization of cities forces upon to the countryside. Because of yearning for the city, many peasants flow out into the city. They hope to obtain their own dwells. But the city cannot give them a guarantee of materials and spirits, so tragedy is inevitable.There are some novels with special subject matters in Liu Qingbang's novels, which are mainly described from the angle of animal's view, reflect the tragedy because of people's selfish. Mankind always neglect the other lives in the nature, as a result, they will be punished.The third kind of tragedy is human nature tragedy. Human nature is a necessary part in each writer's works, it is very important. In Liu Qingbang's novels, he has shown his distinctive comprehension about human nature to us. He has weakened this background although most of his novels take"Cultural Revolution"as background. Some works explore the weakness of human nature results in the tragedy of others, and the difficult position of human nature when people face to make a choice. There are still a lot of novels have displayed the masses which is lack of rational knowledge and consciousness persecutes the individual. When reading that we will feel frightened and horrible. All about that call in question to our national character, i.e. at the time of developing a modernization of economy strongly, whether we should also make great efforts to carry out the modernization of our national character."Soft and beautiful novel"in Liu Qingbang's novels mainly takes the young girls and children as an object. In these works, details are calm and soft, language is graceful, implicit, fresh, natural. Therefore, it is an important approach to enter Liu Qingbang's novel world and understand the esthetics content that explore his tragedy consciousness.The disgrace that his family suffers from the political discrimination in the childhood; the painful experience of his father and brother's death; the torments brought by long-term poverty-stricken; the depressive sexual desire in his age of puberty; the dream of attending school is vanishing into the air; the hope heading for the far-away place cannot carry out; the bitter career in the colliery; lost of spirit home after walking into Peking, all of above act on Liu Qingbang's specially sensitive intelligent and indom- itable will, form his special tragedy consciousness. This consciousness permeates through his works, brings about the special tragic style and tragedy consciousness which are narrated above.Conclusion:Liu Qingbang insists on his own literary ideal all the time. Under the spring tide of commodity economy, he cultivates his own fields quietly and seriously. He has fixed his position in writing the bottom, which reflects his consciousness of common people and humanism.Liu Qingbang always sticks to writing the rural area and the coal mine as his main themes, persists to show the world in his way.
